Mileage Comparison 1998 Dodge Ram Pickup

The test vehicle was a 1998 Dodge Ram extended Cab 4x4 equipped with the 5.9L engine and automatic transmission. The vehicle had 75,000 miles on the odometer at the start of the test.

This test was run in two stages, which involved driving 1000 miles for each phase. The test was completed in each stage at the first refill point past 1000 miles driven. The test involved city, highway and mountain driving. The petroleum lubricants were drained at the end of the first test phase and Amsoil Synthetic Oils were installed before the start of the second test phase.

The following is the results of the two tests:

Petroleum miles traveled 1086.8.
Fuel consumed 85.297 gallons.
Mpg 12.741
Amsoil miles traveled 1151.8
Fuel consumed 76.398 gallon
Mpg 15.063

A difference of 18.24% reduction in fuel costs.

Cost Comparison 1st Oil Change.

Only the Amsoil Synthetic items in red will be changed at the second 25,000 mile interval.
Petroleum:     24,000 miles
8 oil filters @ $6.25      = $50.00
4 air filters @ $12.50   = $50.00
13 qts. ATF  @$4.95    = $64.35
8 qts. 80W90 @$2.95   = $23.60
40 qts. 5w30 @$1.25    = $50.00
Total                               $237.95
Amsoil Synthetic: 25,000 miles
2 oil filters @ $10.30    = $20.60
1 TS29 Air filter           = $40.25
13 qts. ATF @ $7.55    = $98.15
8 qts. 75w90 @ $9.20   = $73.60
5 qts. 5w30 @ $ 5.70    = $28.50
Total                               $361.10

Cost Comparison 2nd Oil Change.

Petrol at 48,000  = $237.95  Amsoil at 50,000  = $49.10

The difference in cost is $123.15 for the first oil change.

The test shows the Amsoil allowed the Dodge to travel 64 miles further on 8.90 gallons less fuel consumed. 8.90 gallons @ $1.45 = $12.91 saved per 1000 miles driven or $129.10 per 10,000 miles. The Amsoil air filter is a reusable filter that can be a lifetime filter. The Amsoil motor oils have a recommended change cycle of 25,000 miles. The Amsoil ATF has a change cycle of 5 times longer service life, which is in excess of 187,000 miles for this vehicle. The Amsoil costs less when figured on a cost per mile than the petrol products because 8 times as much petrol oil is used to go 25,000 miles. The difference is Amsoil cost $123.15 more to install and drive for 25,000 miles and will save $129.10 in fuel costs in the first 10,000 miles driven or $322.75 per 25,000 miles. The 2nd oil change involving Amsoil will cost only $49.10 while petrol will cost another $237.95 for 48,000 miles driven.
